Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The aim of this course; is to understand the basic functioning of human physiology, the basic principles of physiology, the basic functions of blood structure and functions, the basic functioning mechanism of cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, reproductive and hormone physiology.
Course Content This course covers the following topics: 'Blood Physiology', 'Circulatory System', 'Kidney and functions', 'Respiratory System', 'Endocrine System', 'Liver and functions', 'Metabolism', 'Gastrointestinal System', 'Reproductive System' ans 'Stress Physiology'.

Weekly Course Subjects

1Physiology of Blood, Components, characteristics, functions of Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes), Hematopoiesis, Erythropoiesis, Erythrocytes, Leukocytes, Thrombocytes, Blood groups, Hemostasis and Blood Coagulation
2General design of Circulatory System: Heart muscle, The heart as a pump and function of the heart valves, Physiology of cardiac muscle, Rhythmical excitation of the heart, Specialized excitatory and conductive system of the heart, Characteristics of the normal Electrocardiogram (ECG).
3Neural regulation of the cardiovascular system, Arterial blood pressure, Microvascular regulation, Coronary circulation.
4Respiratory physiology, Organization of the respiratory system, Pulmonary circulation, Transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in blood and tissue fluids
5Regulation of respiration, Pulmonary volumes and capacities
6Gastrointestinal physiology, General principles of gastrointestinal function-motility, Nervous control, Enteric nervous system and Blood circulation
7Propulsion and mixing of food in the Alimentary Tract, Secretory functions of the Alimentary Tract, Digestion and absorption in the Gastrointestinal Tract
8Renal physiology, Anatomy of the kidneys and functions of kidney, Renal blood flow, Glomerular filtration, Tubular reabsorption and secretion, Regulation of the ion and acid-base balance by the kidneys
9Midterm Exam
10Body Temperature, regulation of temperature
11Introduction to Endocrinology: Regulation of body functions by chemical messengers, Chemical structure and synthesis of hormones, Pituitary hormones and their control by the Hypothalamus
12Adrenocortical Hormones, Insulin, Glucagon, and Diabetes Mellitus, Parathyroid Hormone, Calcitonin, Calcium and Phosphate.
13Reproductive physiology, puberty, male reproductive physiology, femal reproductive physiology
