Cervical Cancer Awareness Seminar Held at IAU

Due to Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, "Cervical (Cervix) Cancer Awareness Seminar" was held by IAU Faculty of Medicine and Health Policies Application and Research Center. In the seminar with the presentation of Assoc. Prof. Hediye DAĞDEVİREN, Faculty Member of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, attention was drawn to the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

The Cervix Cancer Awareness Seminar was completed successfully with great interest and participation. We think that throughout the event, sharing information about cervical cancer played a major role in achieving our aim of raising awareness and raising awareness in our society.

The primary reason for cervical cancer is persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a widely prevalent group of viruses transmitted through sexual contact. Cervical cancer stands out as one of the most preventable and treatable cancer types. However, statistics from 2020 indicate that approximately 604,000 women globally received a cervical cancer diagnosis, with around 342,000 succumbing to the disease. The majority of these cases and fatalities, approximately 90% for both, were concentrated in low- and middle-income nations.

Countries are facing a six-year countdown until 2030 to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) targets, crucial for achieving the ambitious goal of eliminating cervical cancer. Recent studies conducted by researchers from affiliated institutions propose that reaching these targets is unlikely unless nations enhance screening programs, increase the coverage of HPV vaccination, and broaden access to affordable treatment.

The objective of eradicating cervical cancer as a public health concern by 2100 necessitates all countries maintaining an incidence rate of fewer than 4 new cases per 100,000 women annually. This achievement relies on three pivotal pillars and their corresponding targets:

Vaccination: Ensuring 90% of girls are fully vaccinated with the HPV vaccine by the age of 15 years;

Screening: Targeting 70% of women screened with a high-performance test by the ages of 35 and 45 years;

Treatment: Aiming for 90% of women with precancer to receive treatment and effectively managing 90% of women with invasive cancer.

Meeting the 90–70–90 targets by 2030 is imperative for each country to pave the way toward the elimination of cervical cancer by the close of this century.

In this context, in our seminar, Istanbul Aydin University Faculty of Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Assoc. Dr. DAĞDEVİREN shared comprehensive information about the causes, symptoms, early diagnosis methods, treatment options and prevention strategies of cervical cancer. Issues such as its relationship with the HPV virus, raising awareness in society and prevention strategies were also discussed in detail with our participants.

Throughout the seminar, our participants' active participation and questions ensured that the event was held in an interactive and information-filled atmosphere. This interaction contributed to deepening our understanding of cervical cancer and raising greater awareness.

Important steps have been taken towards creating and raising awareness in society, which is the main goal of our seminar. Our participants were encouraged to take steps to raise awareness in their own environment and make more conscious decisions about health with the information they gained after the seminar.

After the completion of our seminar, a special "thank you" plaque was presented to our speaker by Assist. Prof. Arta ARMANİ, Faculty Member of Istanbul Aydın University Faculty of Medicine (Eng.) and Director of Health Policy Application and Research Center.

We would like to thank the participants and our speaker for their support throughout the event. Our seminar is an important contribution to improving public health. We plan to continue social awareness activities with similar events in the future.
