“EXPECTING INSTAGRAM AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO PROTECT INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND DOING SO FAIRLY IS A PRODUCT OF IMAGINATION!”

Istanbul Aydin University (IAU) Faculty of Arts and Science Vice Dean Dr. Gökçen Çatlı Özen has made remarks of great importance on the controlled usage of social media.

Emphasizing the importance of the alarm system developed by Instagram to create awareness for its users although the system does not minimize the problem, Çatlı has stated that an external intervention is a must for cases where individuals cannot manage the time they spend on cyber world.

Çatlı has noted that social media can be considered harmful if its usage does restrict individuals' other daily activities, and that social media can hinder individual success, especially activities such as daily exercise or sleep are abandoned. Çatlı has given tips for individuals on how to establish self-control for the controlled use of social media: "Self-control in terms of social media will likely become to be balanced as the self-worth increases. I think limiting the use of social media with 1 hour for adults is ideal." In addition, she made emphasis the fact that expecting Instagram and other organizations controlled by international forces to protect individual rights and doing so fairly is a product of imagination.

"PEOPLE WHO FREQUENTLY POST ARE LESS HAPPY"

Considering the research made on the negative effects of social media especially for young girls, Çatlı has commented: "10% of the 10-year-old girls and 7% of boys spend their time on the internet for at least 1 hour in a day, while it has been observed that 43% of the girls and 31% of the boys that are over the age of 15 spend their time on the internet for at least 1 hour in a day." Research has revealed that there is a relationship between young girls, social media and unhappiness, and that unhappiness rates are higher for the young girls who post on social media frequently. She has noted that factors such as pressure to look good in photos, perception regarding the social status gained by the places people they have visited and receiving high number of likes and comments for a post has negative effects on psychology.

Dr. Gökçen Çatlı Özen has commented on the age-restriction for the social media:

"It is known that Instagram has more than 1 million users and a small portion of these users are under the age of 13. Instagram has now officially banned users under the age of 13 with new enforcement. I don't think they are meticulous and sincere in implementing this ban. Instagram has to act as a corporate for this and such similar matters, and surrender the policies that breaches trust. I think the age of 13 is early, the minimum age should be 15 and this matter should be meticulously and strictly implemented and audited. Instagram may ensure it reliability if it would be possible to create an account with citizenship number.

"CHILDREN FOLLOW THEIR PARENTS' EXAMPLE RATHER THAN DOING WHAT THEY SAY"

Çatlı has noted how parents should behave to control their children's social media usage: "Accounts of children should be created jointly with their parents, and they should control these accounts frequently. Children follow their parents' example rather than doing what they say. For this reason, parents also should limit their time on social media to 1 hour as they advise their children. It is important to be a role model in daily tasks. What were children to do if there is no adult role model to look up to?"
