Complo Theories are More Infectious Than Virus

The outbreak of “coronavirus” that wrought havoc on the whole world was discussed in the panel of the “Coronavirus: Current Status” held at Istanbul Aydın University.

The "Coronavirus" (SARS-Cov 2) epidemic, which emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and spread worldwide, was discussed in the "Coronavirus: Current Status" panel organized by Istanbul Aydın University (IAU) Faculty of Medicine.

"IT IS NOT A BIOLOGICAL WEAPON"

Giving a detailed presentation on coronavirus prevention methods in the panel, IAU Faculty of Medicine Department of Medical Microbiology Dr. Özer Akgül evaluated the claims of "biological weapon" related to the virus and said "A virus with that low death rate cannot be a biological weapon. Conspiracy theories about the issue are more contagious than the virus."

It was stated that the preparations against the epidemic should be continued without panic, but in case of alarm, while emphasis was placed on personal hygiene, especially on the hands in the panel.

IAU Faculty of Medicine Vice Dean Prof. Zeynep Çiğdem Kayacan was the moderator of the panel participated by IAU Faculty of Medicine Medical Microbiology Department Academic Member Dr. Özer Akgül and Istanbul Universitesi (Cerrahpaşa) Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Medical Microbiology Department President Prof. Dr. Gökhan Aygün as speakers.

IAU ALSO IS TAKING PRECAUTIONS

IAU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan Canbolat, who made the opening speech of the panel, stated that the epidemic once again demonstrated the importance of preventive medicine. Prof. Dr. Canbolat said "SARS-Cov 2 is a type of virus with a high risk of transmission, but low risk of mortality, death. As a matter of fact, this was the case that brought the virus to the forefront of the world agenda. At this point, the ways of virus protection are of great importance. Because there is no known cure for the disease caused by this virus. Treatment can be done only on symptoms. Noting that there is no cure for the virus right now, although there is no any unknown point, Prof. Dr. Canbolat said "We have also taken the necessary measures at our university. We prepared informative banners about the virus and hung them in the places visible on the campus. We also put in apparatus to disinfect hands at building entrances."

"DESCRIPTION OF THE GENETIC CODE IS POSITIVE"

Reminding that humanity has not encountered epidemic for the first time, the moderator of the panel, IAU Faculty of Medicine Vice Dean Prof. Dr. Zeynep Çiğdem Kayacan said "As you may remember, epidemics such as plague in the 13th century, Spanish flu at the end of World War I, cholera in the 1960s, SARS, MERS, swine flu, bird flu in the 2000s caused the death of hundreds of millions of people. Finally, China announced the genetic code of the virus in the Coronavirus epidemic. This is an important and positive development. Because, vaccination and treatment studies will accelerate in the light of this data. Because the virus is pandemic, that is spreading across continents.

Being the first speaker in the panel, IAU Faculty of Medicine Medical Microbiology Department Academician Dr. Özer Akgül made a detailed presentation on the structure, properties, symptoms and prevention methods of coronavirus. Expressing that the virus is unstable, that is, it mutates easily, Dr. Akgül said "Because the virus is one of the viruses we call 'enveloped', it loses its vitality even by washing hands. In addition, when it is suspended in the air as droplets, it loses its vitality within 2-3 hours and loses its ability to make illness and cannot go over long distances. But still the most common way of transmission is with airborne droplets. Mortality of SARS is 10 percent, while coronavirus is between 3 and 3.5 percent."

ATTENTION TO HAND HYGIENE!

Underlining that the most effective way to protect against viruses is hand hygiene., Dr. Akgül said "We should wash our hands with soap whenever possible. If we could not find the opportunity to wash our hands, we should wipe them with alcohol-based chemicals, namely wet wipes and objects like cologne. This action causes the virus to disappear. Also, we should avoid contact of our hands with our face, eyes and mouth unless we wash them. In daily life, we should maintain a distance of at least 2 meters, and avoid close contact with people we suspect of being ill. We definitely need to use tissue paper and then throw it away in cases such as coughing and sneezing. If we cannot find a tissue, we must close to the inside of our elbow."

Stating that the conspiracy theories telling coronavirus is a kind of biological weapon do not reflect the truth, Dr. Akgül continued "The new coronavirus stands out as the species with the highest contagiousness, but the lowest mortality rate, ie, lethality among its congeners. Mortality of viruses such as SARS and MERS that appeared in the early 2000s was around 10 percent and 35 percent, respectively. The rate of the new virus is between 3 and 3.5 percent. There is not any biological weapon with such a low level of lethality. Virus conspiracy theories are now more contagious than the virus itself.

EXPLANATION OF THE "NAME"

Taking the floor as the second speaker, Istanbul University (Cerrahpaşa) Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Medical Microbiology Department President Prof. Dr. Gökhan Aygün said that the most important way to protect ourselves against coronavirus is information and awareness studies. Prof. Dr. Aygün clarified the "name" confusion about the disease and virus. He said that the virus that caused the disease was officially called "SARS-Cov 2" by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the name of the disease caused by the virus was "Covid-19".

Prof. Dr. Aygun expressed that the virus also can be seen in Turkey at any moment. For this reason, we should be prepared 'without panic but in case of alarm'. "More than 60,000 cases have been identified in 62 countries, including China, and more than 3,000 of these have unfortunately died. The virus affects under 30 years of age relatively mildly. There are no fatalities under age 14 until now. Those over the age of 65 and those with chronic conditions such as heart, diabetes and organ failure are at high risk."

SHOULD WE USE MASKS?

Underlining that Turkish people have two important deficiencies related to the virus, Dr. Aygün said, "The first one is to ignore the mild symptoms. Because in this process, we have to care for the lightest finding, even a little bit higher fever. Secondly, our culture of infection control is extremely weak. We need to embed this culture. If we come to the point of measures, we have to strictly apply the basic measures such as such as paying attention to hygiene, avoiding to the hygiene described before, avoiding people who are likely to be sick, taking the hands to your face and mouth without washing them." Expressing that he thought that the treatment of the disease will be found very soon, Prof. Dr. Aygün, "This treatment can be with chloroquine and antiviral drugs." Prof. Dr. Aygün also mentioned the use of mask, which has been discussed very much lately, "The World Health Organization does not consider it necessary to use masks except in countries where the disease is very intense. On the contrary, people who have symptoms, that is, with signs of disease, need to wear masks." Prof. Dr. Aygün said that the most important reason for the increase in mask prices is opportunism. The panel ended with a question and answer session.
