Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The aim of the course is to give basic information about the structural behavior of structural elements according to structural elements and construction systems and materials; the concept of structural stability and the criteria for ensuring stability according to the type of construction system. Soil types and the selection criteria of foundation types to be selected accordingly. Comprehension of insulation measures and drainage principles in construction. Function and organization principles of wall cavities and detailed solution principles.
Course Content Stability concept, vertical structural elements, insulation measures, wall cavities and detail solutions in wall cavities.

Weekly Course Subjects

1Definitions, classifications, structural elements, the concept of structural system, construction systems according to behavior, construction systems according to materials
2Structural decisions in architectural design process; stability concept; ensuring stability in reinforced concrete, steel, timber, prefabricated, masonry construction systems
3Ground types, excavation, rope scaffolding, precautions to be taken in excavation
4Foundation types (shallow foundations, deep foundations); insulation measures for structural elements in the ground, drainage system, areal drainage, environmental drainage
5Load-bearing walls (stone, adobe, brick, wood, reinforced concrete); columns, pillars, struts; the concept of slenderness
6Dividing infill walls (wood, glass, plaster, brick, metal, mixed)
7Insulation applications on walls, wall coverings (plaster, paint, ceramic, paper, etc.)
8MIDTERM EXAM
9The function of the wall cavity, problems and solution approaches in the wall cavity, the establishment of the wall cavity
10Dimensioning in doors and windows, door and window frame-wall relationship, frame-sash relationship, frame-sash relationship in regulations
11Classification of doors, sash organization, auxiliary products
12Classification of windows, sash organization, auxiliary products
