Purpose and Content

The aim of the course To introduce the role of urban furniture in open spaces, To increase the awareness of the importance of step-by-step process of making furniture usage decisions in open spaces, To introduce the types of urban furniture used in open spaces and the materials used in their construction, To increase the awareness of the importance of making sustainable choices to produce environmentally beneficial urban furniture.
Course Content Urban space and urban furniture. Historical development of urban furniture. Urban furniture design criteria; functional criteria, psychological criteria and technological criteria. Classification of urban furniture. Urban furniture connected to infrastructure; lighting elements; information communication and sign boards, telephone booths, public transportation stops, square clocks, water elements. Non-infrastructure dependent urban furniture; Seating elements, garbage bins, plant containers, cover elements, paving, bicycle parks, tree grates and protectors, playground elements, sculptures. Urban furniture and vandalism. Evaluation of the visual and functional relations of urban furniture with the space in which they are used, development of decisions regarding the selection of the most appropriate urban furniture for the space. Examples of urban furniture used in urban spaces in different countries.
