Purpose and Content

The aim of the course	The main purpose of the course is to introduce the basic concepts and theories related to poverty and to examine the new phenomenon of poverty in the context of globalization and poverty in the context of social policy. In addition, social aid mechanisms in the world and in Turkey in the fight against poverty, the manifestations of poverty in Turkey and current policies and strategies regarding poverty are conveyed in a critical and analytical perspective on the axis of social work theory and practice.
Course Content	Definitional and conceptual explanations of poverty, poverty cycle, theoretical approaches to poverty, globalization and poverty, poverty and disadvantaged groups (women, elderly, children, disabled), from intermittent poverty to permanent poverty, new poverty, social policy and poverty, poverty and social rights, poverty and social aid, poverty and social aid mechanisms in Turkey, current policies and strategies in Turkey regarding poverty and social aid, social aid mechanisms for poverty in the world, social services and social service interventions against poverty.

The aim of the course

Course Content

Definitional and conceptual explanations of poverty, poverty cycle, theoretical approaches to poverty, globalization and poverty, poverty and disadvantaged groups (women, elderly, children, disabled), from intermittent poverty to permanent poverty, new poverty, social policy and poverty, poverty and social rights, poverty and social aid, poverty and social aid mechanisms in Turkey, current policies and strategies in Turkey regarding poverty and social aid, social aid mechanisms for poverty in the world, social services and social service interventions against poverty.

Learning Outcomes

The student possess knowledge of theory, approaches, models, legislation, human behavior, human rights, human behaviors and social environment, social problems related to social work discipline; social welfare policies and services; social work administration, professional ethics, principles and values, and information of the applied fields of social work
The student possess knowledge of research methodologies and techniques, as well as of information technologies and establishing effective communication
The student possess the basic practical knowledge to accomplish social work intervention at individual, group, organization, and societal levels, and for varied counselees who have different characteristics in terms of the global
The student possess skills to make observations and conduct professional interviews at each stage of the social work, of reporting and, establishing written and oral communication, using communication mediums effectively in the context of application
The student possess skills to conduct social work research, utilize the findings of already conducted research, of using information and other technologies, interpreting the professional literature, critical thinking, making analysis and synthesis
The student possess skills to fulfil administrative duties by using contemporary administrative information and techniques, to create common services with leadership, cooperation among institutions, social dialogue understanding
Along with the social work application at generalist level with client groups, they possess skills to accomplish the planned intervention process
They possess skills to conduct intervention by acknowledging the positive value of difference
By using his/her accumulated knowledge related to social work fields, s/he conducts social work intervention independently or as a team member, and takes responsibility, as well plans and manages events regarding the development of employees working under his/her authority/responsibility
S/he assesses the acquired information and skills related to his/her field with a critical approach; as well uses the competency to learn foreign languages, information and communication technologies and embraces the understanding of life-long learning by constituting a role model for the society with her/his skills, abilities, values and attitudes
S/he monitors the developments in the field of social work locally and globally, informs the related institutions and individuals regarding these developments, shares her/his thoughts and solution offerings with his/her colleagues and professionals from other fields by supplementing his/her views with quantitative and qualitative findings, and accordingly, designs projects with social responsibility
S/he determines the duties, authorities, rights and responsibilities related to social work profession, supports the development of the profession, and acts in accordance with legislation, professional ethics, norms and standards, accreditation management and administration processes
S/he uses the information and skills peculiar to social work with a right-based and social justice-centered approach, as well as the planned change process in the cliental system, within the framing of societal, scientific, cultural, professional, and environmental values, by taking on the responsibilities and necessities required by the social work intervention, in working with individuals, families, organizations and macro-level applications with the society
