Purpose and Content

The aim of the course Language and Culture is designed to be an introductory level course. Students become familiar with the theory and research related to issues such as 1) the relationship of languager and culture; 2) the linguistic signs and cultural encodings, role of language in the processes through which children and adolescents 3) the relationship between class, race, gender, institutional setting, and linguistic choice; 4) spoken, oral culture and print language, literate culture 5)language and cultural idenitity.
Course Content This course provides an overview about the relationship between language and culture. The focus of the course is on issues such as meaning as sign, meaning as action, spoken and written language, language and identity.
