Purpose and Content

The aim of the course This course aims to introduce basic meaning in language, such as meaning in sentences, utterances, and propositions, reference and sense and make students familiar with basic concepts in semantics from reference to sense, logic and word meaning with a focus on Interpersonal and non-literal meaning
Course Content This course involves Basic ideas in semantics, Referring expressions, Predicates, universe of discourse, Deixis and definiteness, UNIT 8 Words and things: extensions and prototypes, sense, Sense properties and stereotypes, Sense relations, Logic, a notation for simple propositions, Connectives: and and or, Word meaning, About dictionaries, Meaning postulates, Properties of predicates, Derivation, Participant roles6 Interpersonal and non-literal meaning. It ends with Speech acts, Perlocutions and illocutions, Felicity conditions, Direct and indirect illocutions, Propositions and illocutions, Conversational implicature, Non-literal meaning: idioms, metaphor, and metonymy.
