Purpose and Content

The aim of the course • To introduce students to a selection of most prominent English literary works chronologically • To cultivate a critical understanding of the work of a selection of English writers and to explore the literature within its historical, intellectual and cultural contexts. • To read, think and analyze critically the chosen texts closely • To develop this critical sense in conjunction with the reading and interpretation of literary texts.
Course Content This course covers literary works from the Renaissance to the present and includes:Earl of Surrey's 'Love, that doth reign and live within my thought', Shakespeare's Sonnet 116 and Macbeth, John Donne's 'The Canonization', Jane Austen's Emma, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception and Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar
