Purpose and Content

The aim of the course	The objective of this course is to equip students with the theoretical and historical grounding needed to analyze the social, cultural, and economic structure of Turkey through a command of core concepts such as social structure, social change, and social institutions. Proceeding from the premise that the present configuration of Turkish society can be read as a composite of structures inherited from the Ottoman era and the modernization experience of the Republican period, the course aims to enable students to assess contemporary social phenomena along the axis of historical continuity and rupture.
Course Content	The course opens with an introduction to the concepts of society and social structure, followed by an examination of the Ottoman social order and the characteristics of Ottoman modernization. The transformation brought about by the founding of the Republic is studied in relation to the political structure and the currents of thought that developed in Turkey. The second part of the course addresses Turkey's economic structure alongside the economic policies of successive periods and the relations of production. The final part offers a comparative discussion of the structural features and transformative tendencies of social institutions under the headings of demographic structure, urbanization, gender and the family, education, and working life. The semester concludes with an integrated assessment of Turkey's social structure.
