Purpose and Content

The aim of the course	The objective of this course is to enable students to grasp the concept of human rights together with its historical development, theoretical foundations, and legal framework; to ground social work as a profession built upon the principles of human rights and social justice; and to analyze social problems from a rights-based perspective. The course proceeds from the premise that social work practice rests not merely on meeting needs but on the recognition and protection of rights-holding.
Course Content	The course opens by outlining the general framework of the concept of human rights, addressing the historical development of rights and the relationship between human needs and rights. The classification of rights into generations is then examined in detail, and the principal national and international instruments of human rights law are introduced. The second part of the course addresses the rights violations faced by vulnerable groups — children, young people, women, people with disabilities, older people, and those living in poverty — along with the protective provisions established for them. The final part covers the relationship social work maintains with human rights, the implications of the rights-based approach for practice, advocacy, multicultural social work, social justice, and anti-oppressive practice.
