Purpose and Content

The aim of the course To teach basic concepts of microbiology
Course Content This course includes topics such as introduction to microbiology, the structure of microorganisms, nutrition and production of microorganisms, host microorganism relations, sterilization and disinfection, diagnosis of infectious diseases, microorganisms and their infections, hospital infections, prevention and control methods, vaccines, immune serums.

Weekly Course Subjects

1Theoretical: Introduction - Introduction to general microbiology terminology, history of microbiology, classification of microorganisms. Lab: Lab Introduction
2Theoretical: Introduction to Bacteriology, Macroscopic Morphology, Microscopic Morphology. Laboratory: Rules to be followed in the microbiology laboratory, laboratory safety
3Theoretical: Metabolic activities in microorganisms. Laboratory:Laboratory equipment used in microbiology, glassware, washing and sterilization of glassware
4Theoretical: Bacterial genetics. Laboratory: Cleaning, hygiene, sanitation, disinfection and applications, disinfectants and mechanisms of action
5Theoretical: Viruses, viroids and prions, their microbiological importance in food. Laboratory: Microscopes and Microscopy
6Theoretical: Classification of fungi, their importance in food in terms of microbiology. Laboratory: Dyes and staining methods used in microbiology, simple staining
7Midterm
8Theoretical: General Parasitology. Laboratory: Gram stain
9Theoretical:Basic epidemiology. Laboratory: Mold and Yeast staining
10Theoretical:Basic immunology. Laboratory: Microbiological Cultivation
11Theoretical: Microbe Interactions Laboratory: Planting and Culture Methods
12Theoretical: Algae, classification, importance of Cyanobacter in food in terms of microbiology. Laboratory: Media and preparation
13Theoretical: Helminths Laboratory: Examination of normal flora, gram staining
