Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The aim of this course is to recognize different usage areas of photography and to evaluate the narrative of photography in terms of technical, aesthetic, social, historical and ideological aspects.
Course Content Includes the content of Basic Photography and Visual Arts to contribute to Radio, Television and Cinema Department applications.

Weekly Course Subjects

1The nature of photography
2Introduction of camera and auxiliary devices, functions, variables (depth of field, motion control, focal length, film sensitivity, etc.), frame methods and interventions with these devices.
3Reading Composition and Photography: Composition of still image, basic composition rules will be covered and an introduction will be given to how the narrative of photography will be analyzed in aesthetic, social, historical and ideological aspects. The relationship between photography and reality will be discussed.
4Early Art Photography (1) 1850-1917.
5Early Art Photography (1) 1917-1950.
6An understanding of the context between photography and cinema will be provided.
7Image and Design.
8Midterm exam.
9Photography Techniques.
10Document Photography: The importance of photography in the formation of Historical Visual Memory is discussed within the framework of Document Photography. In this context, especially in the first half of the 20th century and in the first half of the second half, examples of documentary photographers working both institutionally and independently are included.
11Portrait Photography: The concept of Portrait Photography will be discussed in the light of its artistic origins. The ontological origins of the classical portrait style in the photograph are exemplified by the traces of tradition in Classical, Renaissance, Rococo, Baroque, Romantic, Neo-Classical and modern art movements. Applications of content and style such as the idealization of the subject in portrait photography, the use of space, the function of lighting are discussed on the examples.
12Alternative Approaches: Photography applications that are diversified in terms of subject and expression in 1970s. The effects of the social movements and radical changes in the social and cultural sphere at the end of the 60s on photography are discussed. How class, race and gender debates are expressed in photographic terms is interpreted through discussions.
13Documentary Photography: In the second half of the 20th century, the concept of Documentary Photography, which grows in parallel with the need for visual materials in the press, is being discussed. The working areas of the agencies operating in institutional or office basis are defined with examples.
14Turkey Photo: Contemporary fed by a general framework in which the title of the photo is transferred to the universal practice in Turkey and local trends. It is discussed how contemporary Turkish photographers' work is affected by changes in social and cultural fields and how this process is reflected in their work.
