Purpose and Content

The aim of the course Students taking this course will learn the basic concepts of special education, the purpose and importance of special education; They will be able to understand the learning characteristics of students with mental disabilities, learning disabilities, language, communication, speech disorders and hearing disabilities who need special education, describe the characteristics of the individual education program used in special education and develop application examples.
Course Content Basic concepts about special education. The purpose, importance and basic principles of special education. History of special education. Basic factors that cause disability requiring special education. Preparation of educational environments in special education. Characteristics of the special education program. Individualized education program. Individualized teaching program. Classification of children requiring special education: Children with intellectual disabilities; Children with learning disabilities; Children with language, speech and communication disorders; Children with hearing impairment: -definition, -causes, -diagnosis/evaluation, -prevalence, -characteristics, -suggestions for teachers

1Discussing the course, its scope, operation and requirements. Understanding and explaining basic terms related to special education (impairment, disability, handicap/disability, etc.)
2What is special education? What are the aims and principles of special education? History of special education. Who does it cover? Who is a child with special needs?
3What are the reasons for needing special education? What is inclusion a) principles of inclusion b)History of inclusion and legal regulations in the world c)History of inclusion and legal regulations in Türkiye
4Where is special education applied? Individualized education program: elements of the program (goals and content, teaching processes and evaluation)
5How is diagnosis made in special education?
6Characteristics and education of mentally retarded children.
7Characteristics and education of children with learning disabilities and attention deficit and hyperactivity.
8Education of children with visual and hearing impairments
9MIDTERM EXAM
10Characteristics and education of children with communication disabilities
11Children with pervasive developmental disorder and their education
