Purpose and Content

The aim of the course To provide students with basic information about communication systems: to teach concepts such as modulation, noise, analog communication, digital communication, etc. and communication system hardware.
Course Content Introduction: History of communication, components of a communication system, basic concepts: signals, noise, dB, BER, SER etc. Modulation and its necessity, modulation techniques: AM, FM, PM, circuits used in communication systems: filters, oscillators, AM and FM modulation/demodulation circuits, introduction to digital communication.

3The necessity of modulation, AM modulation and demodulation
4AM Modulation/demodulation circuits
5FM Modulation and demodulation, Phase (PM) modulation
6FM Modulation/demodulation circuits
7Introduction to Digital Signals: Binary number system and operations,
8Recitation for the midterm exam
9Midterm Exam
10Introduction to digital communication: Sampling and Nyquist criteria, quantization
11Introduction to digital communication (Continued): Channel, channel capacity, coding, parity and communication error detection via parity bits
12Multiplexing concepts and techniques in data communication: FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, OFDM
13Switching techniques: Circuit and packet switching.
14Recitation for the final exam.
