The UNESCO Chair on Cultural Diplomacy, Governance and Education, established in 2014 within Istanbul Aydın University, responds to the need for cultural diplomacy in today’s multicultural societies.

Political actors, international organizations, educational institutions, and individuals must find fair ways to reconcile the values and norms of different cultural groups within society. In this context, political systems must reflect cultural diversity in decision-making mechanisms. Cultural diplomacy identifies power structures and networks within cultures, builds international bridges, and fosters interaction. By supporting national interests in harmony with international peace and sustainability, cultural diplomacy initiates or encourages the exchange of ideas, values, traditions, and other cultural or identity elements. Together with education, cultural diplomacy helps nourish a “Culture of Sustainability”.

The UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Peace, established at Istanbul Aydın University in 2016, aims to implement peace education programs, raise awareness on human rights among women and youth from different cultures, and encourage them to contribute to a culture of peace. It focuses on research, education, capacity building, and documentation activities, aiming to strengthen cooperation between internationally renowned researchers and academics in the Balkans, the Middle East, Africa, and those in Türkiye.
