Purpose and Content

The aim of the course Understanding the general definitions related to alternating current, calculating and measuring its various values, and comprehending the behavior and purposes of use of circuit elements in AC under both individual and complex connections.
Course Content Values of alternating current and their relationships, waveform equations, representation of AC using vectors, types of AC loads, series/parallel resistor–inductor–capacitor circuits, active–reactive–apparent power, power phasor, power factor concepts, resonance circuits, circuit analysis using complex numbers.

Weekly Course Subjects

1Definitions of alternating current (AC) and alternating voltage; period and frequency; instantaneous, root mean square (RMS), and average values of the sine wave.
2Derivation of the wave equations of various AC signals, and the calculation of their average and root mean square (RMS) values.
3Vector representation of alternating current; concepts of zero phase, leading phase, lagging phase, and phase difference; sinusoidal waveforms; and vector addition.
4Resistors, inductors, and capacitors in AC circuits; analysis of purely resistive AC circuits.
5AC circuits with inductors; AC circuits with capacitors.
6Power in AC circuits.
7Series RL circuits and series RC circuits.
8Series RLC circuits.
9Midterm Exam
10Parallel RL circuits and parallel RC circuits.
11Parallel RLC circuits.
12Resonant circuits.
13AC circuit analysis with complex numbers.
14AC circuit analysis with complex numbers.
