PROF. DR. ORHAN GÖLBAŞI HAS EXPLAINED THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE: “THE HISTORY OF SPACE WILL CHANGE”

IAU GÖKMER Director Prof. Dr. Orhan Gölbaşı has stated that the James Webb Space Telescope which will be launched on December 25th, 2021, will rewrite the history of space.

Co-production of NASA, CSA (Canadian Space Agency) and ESA (European Space Agency, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be launched on December 25th, 2021. Weighing 6 tons, the telescope has been located in Ariane-5 rocket of ESA which is in French Guiana. The telescope which costs approximately 10 billion dollars, has the feature of being the most expensive project to be conducted to this day.

"EVEN POWERFULTHAN THE HUBBLE"

While making his remarks on the subject, Istanbul Aydin University (IAU) Space Sciences Application and Research Center (GÖKMER) Director Prof. Dr. Orhan Gölbaşı has stated that James Webb telescope is much powerful than the Hubble telescope. "Serving for 31 years as the first space telescope, Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) mirror diameter was merely 2.4 meters. Nevertheless, it has provided us with extraordinary images of the deep space because of that it was located outside of the atmosphere and it has solved many mysteries of the space. Now, the excitement of the contributions of a telescope, which is 100 times stronger than the Hubble, to science has surrounded us. Such that, James Webb has been designed in order to determine the faded astronomical objects which have formed after the Big Bang and we have not yet observed with Hubble. Thus, we will be able to gather information on the formation of the galaxy, and exploration of new galaxies as well as exoplanets. In a way, James Webb will rewrite the history of the space."

"NO DELAYS IN THIS INSTANCE"

Reminding that the launch of James Webb telescope has been delayed many times, Gölbaşı has stated that "Millimetric calculations are required for the placement of the telescope to the rocket, thus, it takes a long time. In addition, the protective shields and automatic monitoring preparation phases of the telescope is demonstrated for number of times. The last launch date provided by NASA was updated as Saturday, December 25th, 2021, at 15.20 in (Turkey zone). There seems to be no more delays in this instance".

James Webb will be observing on infrared wavelength instead of ultraviolet wavelength as differently from the Hubble. While the Hubble orbits at a 550 km distance from the Earth, James Webb telescope will be orbiting at a distance which is 4 times more than the Earth-Moon distance. If everything goes smoothly, location of the telescope to the orbit, adjustments for auto-observation and obtaining the first light will take approximately 6 months.
