Basic Medical Sciences refer to the scientific disciplines that form the foundation of medical knowledge and practice. These sciences provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure, function, and mechanisms of the human body and its various systems. Basic Medical Sciences constitute a critical foundation for clinical medicine and are essential for healthcare professionals to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases.
The key disciplines within the field of Basic Medical Sciences include Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Biochemistry, Biophysics, Medical Biology and Genetics, Microbiology, Histology, and Medical Education. These disciplines are interconnected and provide a comprehensive understanding of the human body, its functions, and disease mechanisms. Medical students and healthcare professionals study these sciences intensively throughout their education and training in order to build a solid foundation for clinical practice and advanced specialization.
The preclinical phase, referred to as Basic Medical Sciences, covers the first three years of the six-year medical education program, while the clinical phase comprises the final three years. Each academic year consists of a 32-week instructional period (annual program). Courses begin in the fall semester each year. Courses and seminars of the preclinical phase (Years 1–3) are delivered in Turkish at the university campus located in Istanbul, namely the “Halit Aydın Florya Campus.”
