Turkey, which has faced major disasters throughout various periods of history, is at risk of disasters due to its topographical and geological structure and climatic conditions. In particular, the disasters we have experienced in recent history, which are still remembered by the current generation, clearly reveal the scale of the threat we face and the damage it can cause us.
This situation necessitates a comprehensive approach to disaster management in our country, requiring the adoption of proactive strategies to minimize potential loss of life and property before a disaster occurs, rather than relying on costly recovery efforts after the fact.
In this context, as the Disaster Education, Application, and Research Center (AFAM) at Istanbul Aydın University, we aim to:
- We are conducting studies aimed at enabling the entire society to prepare for disasters before they occur,
- sharing the experiences we have gained in our country with other nations facing similar risks by following international studies,
- implementing applications that can serve as models in our region and possess the knowledge base to play an effective role at both national and international levels, and
- developing scientific research and projects that can serve as examples.
We sincerely believe that the work we have carried out and plan to carry out under the AFAM umbrella will make significant contributions to preparedness for disasters that deeply affect both our economy and social life, causing great suffering and severe damage.
