Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The aim of this course is to analyze the political transformation of Europe from the French Revolution of 1789 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914, through key events, ideologies, and actors. It is designed to enable students to understand how the modern European state system was shaped by forces such as nationalism, liberalism, and imperialism, and its lasting impact on contemporary international relations.
Course Content The course examines how the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars overturned the European order, followed by the 1815 Vienna Restoration and the subsequent revolutionary waves of 1830 and 1848 against this order. It focuses on how Italian and German national unifications were achieved through diplomatic maneuvers and wars. Finally, it analyzes the imperial rivalry among the Great Powers, the formation of alliance systems, and the inevitable path to World War I during the 1871-1914 period.
