PHYSIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

unnamed-2.jpg
The Department of Medical Physiology is a field of medical science that focuses on examining the physiological functions of the human body. It is an important discipline concerned with understanding how various systems and organs operate and how they interact with one another to maintain homeostasis. Medical physiologists study different aspects of bodily functions such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems. They use a wide range of techniques and tools, including cellular and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, biophysics, and imaging technologies, to investigate how these systems function. Research conducted in the Department of Medical Physiology aims to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying human physiology and how these mechanisms are affected by disease.
Some of the primary functions of the Department of Physiology in the Faculty of Medicine include:
  1. Research: The Department of Physiology conducts research to investigate the mechanisms of normal physiological functions as well as the underlying causes of disease and dysfunction. This research may involve a broad range of techniques, including molecular biology, electrophysiology, and imaging.
  2. Education: The Department of Physiology is responsible for educating medical students and other healthcare professionals about the normal physiological functions of the human body and the mechanisms of disease and dysfunction. This may include lectures, seminars, practical sessions, and other instructional activities.
  3. Service: The Department of Physiology provides expertise and support to other departments and researchers within the Faculty of Medicine, as well as to external organizations such as hospitals, research institutes, and pharmaceutical companies. This may include offering technical support, consulting on research projects, or contributing to the development of new treatments and therapies.
  4. Overall, the Department of Physiology plays a critical role in medical education and research by providing the foundational knowledge of the human body that is essential for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.
In summary, the primary goal of physiology courses is to ensure that students understand that human physiology forms the basis of all medical practices they will encounter throughout their professional careers. Additionally, the course aims to provide students with sufficient and fundamental knowledge of all physiological systems. In this way, a solid foundation is prepared for students to comprehend the clinical knowledge they will acquire in upper-level courses.

Our Mission
The primary mission of the Department of Physiology is to advance scientific knowledge regarding the mechanisms underlying normal and abnormal physiological functions with the aim of improving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. This mission is typically fulfilled through a combination of research, education, and service activities. In our Department of Physiology, future physicians are trained with rapidly evolving and continuously updated physiological knowledge, and they are provided with the essential foundational practical medical training. Additionally, providing advanced-level physiology education to young academics—including graduate, doctoral, and medical specialty training—is also part of our mission. Various scientific research studies are conducted in our department in different areas of physiology (Electrophysiological measurements and analyses; Evoked / Event-Related Potential analyses; Electrodermal activity). Our Aim: To conduct education and research at contemporary standards, to create a pioneering working environment utilizing advanced technologies, to achieve national and international recognition, and to contribute to the establishment of collaborative research infrastructures and centers that translate fundamental physiological findings into clinical practice.

Our Vision
The vision of the Department of Physiology is to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying human physiology and to use this knowledge to improve human health and well-being.
  1. The Department of Physiology aims to achieve this vision through research, education, and clinical applications. Research conducted in the department focuses on understanding the molecular, cellular, and systemic mechanisms of physiological processes in health and disease. This research serves as a foundation for developing new therapies and treatments for various diseases and conditions.
  2. In terms of education, the department's vision is to provide students with a strong foundation in physiological principles and to prepare them for careers in research, teaching, and clinical practice. This includes offering high-quality courses, training programs, and research opportunities that allow students to gain hands-on experience in the field.
  3. Finally, the clinical application of physiology involves translating the knowledge and techniques derived from physiological research into the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The vision of a Department of Physiology may also include a commitment to working collaboratively with clinicians to integrate research findings into clinical practice for improved patient outcomes.
