The Department of Biophysics is a medical science discipline that combines the principles of physics, mathematics, and chemistry to examine biological systems. It is typically located within a medical faculty or a university’s school of health sciences and constitutes a fundamental component of modern medical research and practice. The primary role of the Biophysics Department is to teach students, including medical students, the physical and chemical principles underlying the structure and function of biological systems from the molecular level to the organism level. This includes the study of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids, as well as the physical properties of cells, tissues, and organs.
Various definitions are used for biophysics, such as “the physics of living organisms” or “the application of physical principles to the study of living structures.” The evaluation of physical phenomena such as pressure, flow, and movement in body systems is among the topics of general biophysics. The interaction of electrical phenomena with living organisms or the electrical activity produced by living systems falls under the field of electrobiophysics. The interaction of radioactivity and electromagnetic radiation with living organisms and their use in medicine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes are subjects related to radiation biophysics. The molecular structure of living organisms, their interactions, and cellular events ranging from nanotechnology to cancer mechanisms fall under the field of molecular biophysics.
In addition to education, biophysics conducts research in various fields such as molecular biophysics, structural biology, and bioinformatics to gain a deeper understanding of biological systems at the molecular and cellular levels. This research is crucial for the advancement of medical knowledge and the development of new treatments for diseases and injuries.
Biophysics also collaborates with other departments such as biochemistry, genetics, and pharmacology to provide a comprehensive understanding of the physical and chemical properties of biological systems and their relationship to medical applications. This includes the development of new diagnostic tools, therapies, and treatments based on the detailed understanding of the biophysical properties of biological systems. Overall, Biophysics plays a critical role in modern medical research and practice and provides a knowledge base that supports advances across a wide range of medical disciplines.

Our Mission
Biophysics, which has taken its place among the basic medical sciences courses in medical faculties, is a scientific discipline that sheds light on clinical applications. We aim to convey knowledge and experience to our students on the topics mentioned above through both theoretical education and hands-on experiments conducted in our advanced laboratory. As a relatively young medical faculty at Istanbul Aydın University, our primary mission is to provide future physicians—who think critically, produce solutions, and apply accurate diagnosis and treatment—with this essential knowledge, and to raise doctors who will contribute to their country and humanity, reaching the level of contemporary civilization envisioned by Atatürk.

Our Vision
The vision of the Department of Biophysics of the Faculty of Medicine may vary across institutions, but generally includes the following elements:
  1. Advancing knowledge: Biophysics aims to expand scientific knowledge of the physical and chemical principles governing biological systems. This includes conducting cutting-edge research to gain a deeper understanding of biological systems at the molecular and cellular levels.
  2. Training the next generation of scientists: Biophysics seeks to provide high-quality education and training to students at all levels, from undergraduate to postdoctoral studies. This includes offering courses, seminars, and research opportunities that equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become leaders in the field of biophysics.
  3. Developing new diagnostic tools and treatments: Biophysics aims to develop new diagnostic tools, therapies, and treatments based on a detailed understanding of the biophysical properties of biological systems. This involves collaborating with other departments and institutions to translate scientific discoveries into practical applications that improve human health.
  4. Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration: Biophysics seeks to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists and clinicians from different fields to address complex medical challenges. This includes encouraging communication and teamwork among researchers and clinicians to develop innovative solutions to medical problems.
  5. Overall, the mission of the Department of Biophysics is to advance knowledge, educate the next generation of scientists, develop new diagnostic tools and treatments, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration to improve human health.
