The Department of Urology is a specialized medical discipline focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders and conditions related to the urinary system and the male reproductive system. Urologists are specially trained physicians who provide comprehensive care to patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly, who experience urological problems.
Key aspects and functions of the Department of Urology include:
I. Urinary Tract Disorders:
  1. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Urologists diagnose and treat UTIs, which may affect various parts of the urinary system, including the bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra. They prescribe appropriate antibiotics and provide management strategies to prevent recurrent infections.
  2. Kidney Stones: Urologists manage kidney stones, which are hard deposits of minerals and salts formed in the kidneys. Treatment options may include medications, dietary modifications, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), or minimally invasive surgeries to remove or break down the stones.
  3. Urinary Incontinence: Urologists evaluate and treat urinary incontinence, which refers to involuntary leakage of urine. They assess the underlying cause and may recommend behavioral techniques, medications, pelvic floor exercises, or surgical interventions to manage the condition.
  4. Bladder Disorders: Urologists diagnose and treat various bladder disorders, including overactive bladder, bladder cancer, interstitial cystitis, and bladder prolapse. They provide medical management, perform surgeries when necessary, and offer interventions such as bladder instillation or Botox injections for bladder-related concerns.
II. Male Reproductive Health:
  1. Erectile Dysfunction: Urologists evaluate and manage erectile dysfunction, a condition characterized by difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity. They investigate underlying causes, prescribe appropriate medications, and offer treatments such as penile implants or other interventions if needed.
  2. Male Infertility: Urologists assess and treat male infertility, which can result from various factors including sperm production issues, blockages in the reproductive tract, hormonal imbalances, or genetic abnormalities. In collaboration with fertility specialists, they may recommend medications, surgical procedures, or assisted reproductive techniques to improve fertility.
  3. Prostate Health: Urologists provide comprehensive care for conditions affecting the prostate gland, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer, and prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate). They offer medical treatment, perform prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening, conduct biopsies, and carry out surgical procedures such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or robot-assisted prostatectomy.
III. Urological Surgeries:
  1. Urological Oncology: Urologists perform surgeries to treat urological cancers, including kidney cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and penile cancer. Surgical interventions may involve tumor removal, organ-preserving procedures, lymph node dissection, or complete organ removal when necessary.
  2. Minimally Invasive Procedures: Urologists use minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy or robot-assisted surgery to perform various urological procedures. These approaches offer advantages such as smaller incisions, reduced pain, faster recovery, and improved surgical outcomes.
  3. Endoscopic Procedures: Urologists use endoscopic techniques to visualize and treat urological conditions. These procedures may include cystoscopy (examination of the bladder), ureteroscopy (examination of the ureter), or transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
IV. Pediatric Urology:
  1. Pediatric Urological Conditions: The Urology Department addresses urological conditions specific to children, such as congenital anomalies (e.g., hypospadias, undescended testes), urinary tract abnormalities, vesicoureteral reflux, and bedwetting. Pediatric urologists provide specialized care tailored to the unique needs of pediatric patients.
  2. Pediatric Urological Surgeries: Surgical interventions in children, such as hypospadias repair, orchiopexy (surgical correction of undescended testes), ureteral reimplantation, or bladder reconstruction, are performed by pediatric urologists.
V. Research and Advancements:
  1. Urologists in the department actively participate in research activities to advance the field of urology. They contribute to clinical studies, explore new treatment methods, develop innovative surgical techniques, and engage in medical advancements aimed at improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
The Department of Urology provides comprehensive care for patients with urological disorders and conditions. Urologists use medical management, surgical interventions, and innovative techniques to diagnose, treat, and manage diseases effectively.

Our Mission
The mission of the Istanbul Aydın University Department of Urology is:
  1. To deliver consistent, timely, compassionate, and exceptional patient-centered care focused on optimal outcomes and patient experience by all members of our healthcare team
  2. To provide a supportive environment in which students can explore and advance their understanding of comprehensive subspecialty urological education
  3. To deliver transformative research solutions addressing both common and complex urological problems and conditions.

Our Vision
We foster a strong departmental commitment to basic science and clinical research. All faculty members are expected to contribute to a robust research effort that supports innovative, high-quality patient care. Residents and physician-scientists are also expected to participate in the department’s research initiatives.
