The Department of Medical Pathology is a specialized discipline of medical science focused on the study, diagnosis, and understanding of diseases through the examination of cells, tissues, organs, and bodily fluids. Led by physicians specialized in pathology, known as pathologists, the department collaborates closely with other healthcare professionals to provide essential diagnostic and prognostic information.
  • Some key aspects and functions of the Department of Medical Pathology include:
  1. Diagnostic Pathology: Pathologists play a vital role in disease diagnosis. They examine samples obtained from patients, such as tissue biopsies, blood samples, bodily fluids (e.g., urine, cerebrospinal fluid), and surgical resections. Using a combination of macroscopic, microscopic, and molecular techniques, pathologists identify the presence or absence of disease, determine its nature, and provide valuable information for treatment planning.
  2. Anatomic Pathology: Anatomic pathology is a branch of medical pathology focused on the examination of tissues and organs. Pathologists in this division analyze surgical specimens to diagnose diseases such as cancers, infectious diseases, inflammatory conditions, and autoimmune disorders. Histological techniques, immunohistochemistry, and molecular tests are used to evaluate structural and cellular changes within tissues.
  3. Clinical Pathology: Also known as laboratory medicine, clinical pathology is another branch of medical pathology. Pathologists in this division analyze blood, urine, and other bodily fluids to evaluate biochemical, hematological, immunological, and microbiological parameters. They perform tests such as complete blood counts, coagulation studies, chemistry panels, microbiological cultures, and genetic tests. Clinical pathologists interpret these results to assist in disease diagnosis, monitor treatment effectiveness, and predict patient outcomes.
  4. Cytopathology: Cytopathology focuses on the examination of individual cells obtained from bodily fluids or tissue samples. Pathologists in this division evaluate specimens such as Pap smears, fine-needle aspirations, and fluid aspirates to detect cellular abnormalities associated with conditions like cancer, infections, and inflammatory disorders. They play a crucial role in early diagnosis and screening programs for diseases such as cervical, breast, and lung cancers.
  5. Molecular Pathology: Molecular pathology is a rapidly developing field that integrates pathology with molecular biology and genetics. Pathologists in this area use molecular techniques to identify genetic mutations, gene expression patterns, and changes in DNA, RNA, or protein levels. These tests assist in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, including hereditary disorders, infectious diseases, and cancer.
  6. Autopsy and Forensic Pathology: Pathologists in the Autopsy and Forensic Pathology division perform autopsies to determine the cause of death, investigate suspicious deaths, and provide expert testimony in legal cases. They analyze tissues and organs from deceased individuals, conduct toxicology tests, and collaborate with forensic specialists to determine the cause and manner of death.
  7. Research and Education: Pathologists actively engage in research activities to advance the field of pathology. They conduct studies to better understand disease mechanisms, develop new diagnostic tests, and contribute to the medical literature. Additionally, pathologists play a vital role in medical education by training medical students, residents, and fellows, and by providing continuing education to healthcare professionals.
  • The Department of Medical Pathology is an essential component of healthcare institutions, providing critical diagnostic information that guides patient management and treatment decisions. The expertise and contributions of pathologists enhance patient care, support disease prevention and control, and advance medical science and research.

Our Mission
As the Department of Medical Pathology at Istanbul Aydın University, our mission to improve lives and transform healthcare is:
  1. To provide high-quality, patient-centered healthcare using state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures
  2. To train pathologists as essential members of healthcare teams and prepare them to face current and future challenges in medicine and society
  3. To contribute to the discovery of new scientific knowledge and translate it into pathology practice.

Our Vision
To deliver state-of-the-art diagnostic pathology services while achieving excellence in pathology research and education.
