  • The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a specialized medical discipline focusing on women’s reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth, and related conditions. It integrates two distinct fields: gynecology, which addresses the health of the female reproductive system, and obstetrics, which encompasses pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period.
  • Key aspects and functions of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology include:
  • I. Gynecology:
  1. Well-Woman Care: Gynecologists provide routine preventive care for women, including regular check-ups, breast examinations, pelvic examinations, Pap smears, and screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They address reproductive health concerns, offer guidance on contraceptive options, and provide recommendations for maintaining overall gynecologic health.
  2. Diagnosis and Treatment of Gynecologic Conditions: Gynecologists diagnose and manage a wide range of gynecologic conditions and disorders. These may include menstrual irregularities, fibroids, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and gynecologic cancers. They develop individualized treatment plans that may involve medications, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery.
  3. Reproductive Health and Family Planning: Gynecologists play an essential role in family planning, fertility assessment, and assisted reproductive technologies (such as IVF). They provide guidance on fertility awareness, preconception counseling, and prenatal genetic testing aimed at assessing risks for hereditary conditions. They also address infertility concerns and assist couples throughout fertility treatments.
  4. Menopause Management: Gynecologists offer specialized care for women entering menopause. They manage symptoms such as hot flashes, mood changes, vaginal dryness, and hormonal imbalances. Guidance is provided on hormone replacement therapy and non-hormonal treatment options to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.
  • II. Obstetrics:
  1. Prenatal Care: Obstetricians provide comprehensive prenatal care to pregnant women. This includes regular check-ups, monitoring of fetal development, performing ultrasounds, and conducting necessary tests to ensure the health and well-being of both mother and baby. They also offer guidance on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle modifications during pregnancy.
  2. Labor and Delivery: Obstetricians oversee and manage labor to ensure a safe and healthy delivery. They monitor the progression of labor, provide pain management options, and perform necessary interventions such as cesarean sections or assisted vaginal deliveries (e.g., forceps or vacuum extraction) when required. Obstetricians collaborate closely with nurses, midwives, anesthesiologists, and neonatologists to provide comprehensive care throughout childbirth.
  3. Postpartum Care: Obstetricians continue to provide care to new mothers after childbirth. They monitor physical and emotional recovery, address postpartum complications, and offer guidance on breastfeeding, postpartum nutrition, contraceptive options, and family planning. They may also assist with postpartum depression screening and treatment.
  • III. Surgical Procedures: Obstetricians and gynecologists perform a variety of surgical procedures to diagnose and treat gynecologic conditions. These may include hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries), tubal ligation (permanent contraception), myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids), and procedures for the treatment of gynecologic cancers. They are skilled in both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery.
  • Research and Education: The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology actively engages in research activities to advance knowledge in the field. Obstetricians and gynecologists conduct studies to improve pregnancy outcomes, develop new treatment approaches, and contribute to the medical literature. They also play a vital role in medical education by training medical students, residents, and fellows, sharing their expertise, and promoting evidence-based practices.
  • The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a fundamental component of healthcare institutions, providing comprehensive care to women throughout their reproductive years and beyond. The expertise of obstetricians and gynecologists ensures the well-being of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the management of various gynecologic conditions, ultimately enhancing women’s health and quality of life.

  • Our Mission
To provide better health and hope to all women and families through compassionate care, innovation, education, and discovery.
