The Department of Ophthalmology focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders and diseases related to the eyes and visual system. Ophthalmologists—medical doctors specializing in eye health—lead this department and work in close collaboration with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive eye care to patients.
Key aspects and functions of the Ophthalmology Department include:
  1. Comprehensive Eye Examinations: Ophthalmologists perform detailed eye examinations to assess overall eye health and identify visual problems or eye diseases. These examinations may include visual acuity tests, refraction assessments, intraocular pressure measurements, slit-lamp examinations, and retinal evaluations. Such assessments help ophthalmologists detect refractive errors, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and various other ocular conditions.
  2. Medical and Surgical Treatments: Ophthalmologists provide both medical and surgical treatments for a wide range of eye conditions. They prescribe medications such as eye drops, ointments, or oral drugs to treat infections, inflammation, or other ocular diseases. When surgery is necessary, they perform procedures including cataract surgery, refractive surgery (such as LASIK or PRK), glaucoma surgery, corneal transplantation, retinal detachment repair, and other surgical interventions to restore or improve vision.
  3. Subspecialties in Ophthalmology: The Ophthalmology Department includes various subspecialties that focus on specific areas of eye health. Common subspecialties include:
  4. Cornea and External Diseases: Diagnosis and treatment of corneal disorders and external eye conditions, including corneal transplantation.
  5. Retina and Vitreous: Diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment.
  6. Glaucoma: Diagnosis and management of glaucoma, a group of eye conditions characterized by optic nerve damage.
  7. Pediatric Ophthalmology: Focuses on diagnosing and treating eye disorders in infants, children, and adolescents, including amblyopia, strabismus, and congenital abnormalities.
  8. Oculoplastics: Concerned with reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the eyelids, orbit (eye socket), and tear ducts.
  9. Neuro-ophthalmology: Involves diagnosing and managing visual disorders related to the nervous system, including optic nerve diseases and visual field defects.
  1. Laser and Diagnostic Procedures: Ophthalmologists perform a variety of laser procedures to treat eye conditions. These include laser vision correction (such as LASIK or PRK) for refractive errors, laser treatments for glaucoma, and laser therapy for diabetic retinopathy and retinal disorders. They also use advanced diagnostic tools and imaging techniques—such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography, and visual field testing—to evaluate and monitor eye health.
  2. Vision Rehabilitation: Ophthalmologists collaborate closely with low-vision specialists and vision therapists to provide vision rehabilitation services for individuals with visual impairment. These services aim to maximize visual function and enhance quality of life through assistive devices, training, and adaptive techniques.
  3. Research and Advancements: The Ophthalmology Department actively engages in research and technological innovation. Ophthalmologists contribute to clinical trials, research studies, and technological developments designed to improve diagnostic tools, surgical techniques, and treatment options for various eye conditions.

Our Mission
We shape the future of ophthalmology and vision science by:
  1. Educating and mentoring the next generation of clinicians, educators, and scientists;
  2. Conducting high-impact research, developing innovative technologies involving informatics, and translating discoveries into high-quality patient care;
  3. Serving as leaders in delivering the highest standards of patient care;
  4. Informing public policy related to eye health needs through discovery, practice, and knowledge communication;
  5. Contributing to our communities and enhancing the health of individuals and populations both locally and globally.

Our Vision
