Purpose and Content

The aim of the course To examine the basic concepts, theories and research topics of sociology of education; to discuss the current problems of education in the light of these concepts, theories and topics.
Course Content Theoretical perspectives on the relationship between education and society; school as a social institution; social-structural characteristics of the education system and school; social organisation of the school, its functions and main actors; patterns of authority in education; equality/inequality of opportunity in education; inequalities in who learns what, where and how much in accordance with the place of residence and social categories (class, race, religion, language, ethnicity, gender, etc.). Inequalities in terms of who learns what, where, how much and the individual and social consequences of these inequalities; the role of the education system and schools in the reproduction of existing social, political and economic relations and inequalities.
