From the Brink of Death to Being the First of Faculty!

While Istanbul Aydın University was closing 2019-2020 Academic Year with graduation ceremony, life story of Ahmet Faruk Kanbak who is the first of the Faculty of Science and Letters left mark on the ceremony.

Before starting university, Kanbak faced with death due to liver disease, and his close friend Mehmet Ümit Ersinler was donor for him, and with his support, Kanbak was back to higher education.One of the biggest foundation universities in Turkey, Istanbul Aydın University, held 2019-2020 Academic Year Graduation Ceremony and send more than 5000 graduates to the life. With the participation of firsts of faculties and vocational schools and deans of faculties and directors of vocational schools, representative ceremony was held by following the precautions for COVID-19 pandemic and it was published on the official Youtube channel of the university. Determination of the first of Faculty of Science and Letters Department of History graduate Ahmet Faruk Kanbak (41) in the education, and the support of his friend Mehmet Ümit Ersinler in this journey marked on the ceremony."I ALMOST DIED"Health of Ahmet Faruk Kanbak who was born in 1979, worsened during his international relations education in university in 2004. By time his body had dropsies and acute pains. Works of his family went bad and he left the school. He did not tell anybody about his disease until the day he had an attack and hospitalized…"I was at third class when incredible pains started in my abdominal region. I was having loss of power and weakness at the same time. Firstly, I thought that it was because the stress of lessons and works that went bad. This continued for about 7 years. When I had my first attack and was hospitalized, doctors could not diagnose to my disease for a long time. In 2011, I was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Disease progressed. So that, I almost became chair bond. I learned that I had development of multiple organ failure and I had very little chance to survive when I hospitalized for hepatorenal syndrome in 2015. I almost died. I had to suspend my higher education for 10 years because the issue was critical and my first chance was liver transplant. Meanwhile, my oldest brother died due to the same disease. Finally, I had liver transplant surgery in 18 June 2015. I had difficult years."HE HELD ON LIFE THROUGH EDUCATIONDespite all the difficulties, Ahmet Faruk Kanbak hold on to life. He decided to have a university diploma firstly. Kanbak stated "So that, I started Arabic course after a little while, even while I am having sutures. Then I had university entrance exam. I got into Istanbul Aydın University Faculty of Science and Letters Department of History with 100% scholarship. ".  "IAU IS MY HOME"As reasons to choose Istanbul Aydın University Kanbak stated "It is near to me. The environment in here and in the campus impressed me. Especially in a period that I have to care about my health, this environment was almost cut out for me. Also, the environment, approaches of academic members, multi voiced environment I had education, universal structure and scientific point of view impressed me and had important effect in my success. As our Chairman of Board of Trustees Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aydın mentioned, here is my home and I will never break my connection with here"."I COULD NOT SUCCEED WITHOUT HOPE"Kanbak said "I came to the ceremony with my close friend from the first university Mehmet Ümit Ersinler. He is also my donor. He has great importance in the succeed I have today. When my disease first appeared and I had transplant, he had blood and tissue test without informing me and he learned that he complied. He tried to persuade me for one year and he succeed at the end. He supported me after the surgery. So that, doctor banned public transport for a long time. I was not allowed to get into crowded places. Ümit gave me ride to the university every day. Also, he started associate degree program of Photography and Camerawork in the university. Now, he continues his education. We are also business partners. We make second hand book trade, stationery business and bookselling. Thus, we have right to sign for each other. He came and enrolled for me without informing me. I would not achieve here without Ümit. After this, my goal is academic career. I even received acceptance from another university for postgraduate. I plan to specialize in Ottoman and Republic modernization"."GO INTO THE LIGHT OF SCIENCE WHOLEHEARTEDLY"Kanbak stated "I am now 60% disabled according to the standards the state determined. I have medicines that I have to use regularly and constant. And, staying at home and inaction during the quarantine period, my diabetes disease relapsed. I don't have any serious problem except this. Ümit was back to his normal life one month after the transplant surgery. Go into the light of science wholeheartedly. Thinking bright, looking at the life scientifically, being realist and being with the right persons are important details. I caught these in Istanbul Aydın University. So indeed, both in higher education and having a friend such as Ümit, I was very lucky.""AHMET BROTHER HAD HESITATIONS"Donor Mehmet Ümit Ersinler stated "We are more like brothers with Kanbak. Diseases of Athletes could not be diagnosed for a long time. It took long time to understand that the disease was because of the liver. He had a long and difficult slimming period before the surgery because his weight was too much. He was so in love with science and education that I could not shup my eyes for him to be away from science world. I wanted him to continue in this journey and to higher education and science world. He actually had hesitated when he started the university. He had 'can I do this' thoughts especially due to his age. However, we saw that here the actual young were Ahmet's brother. Here there is such an environment that I am suspicious whether Ahmet brother could achieve this success in another place instead of Istanbul Aydın University. "
