Purpose and Content

The aim of the course To teach the basics of deformation processes, machining and powder metallurgy.
Course Content Fundementals of elasticity and plasticity. Yielding criteria. Fundemantals of bulk forming. Open and closed die forging. Rolling. Wire and rod drawing. Extrusion. Sheet metal forming. Punching, bending deep drawing and spinning. Powder metallurgy. Machining theory. Chip formation and cutting tools. Machinability. Tool life. Metrology.

Weekly Course Subjects

1Fundementals of elasticity and plasticity, metallurgic principles, yielding criteria.
2General introduction and classification of plastic forming methods.
3Principles of mass formatting.Methods of mass formatting.Open and closed die forging.
4Forging methods, forging machines and mold design.
5Rolling. Rod, sheet and profile rolling.
6Wire and rod drawing.
7Extrusion.
8Sheet metal forming. General classifications and cutting methods(Punching, bending, deep drawing and spinning).
9Midterm exam
10Bending,bending dies, springing back in bending, sample problems
11Deep drawing, special methods in metal spinning.Powder metallurgy.
12Machining theory, chip formation and cutting tools, cutting fluids, machinability, tool life.
13Machining operations and machines.
14General review, sample questions.
