Purpose and Content

The aim of the course To teach the design and functions of machine elements, material selection criteria.
Course Content Design principles for static and dynamic load applications. Fastening elements. Classification of fastening elements. Welding, brazing and joining. Riveted joints. Interference fits. Bolt and nut joints and design fundementals. Shafts and permanent couplings. Keys.

1Classification of machine elements, design procedures. Design principles for static and variable stresses.
2Classification of joning elements and methods, design of welded joints.
3Brazing and soldering, adhesive bonding, material selection, design examples.
4Riveted joints, types, material selection, design examples.
5Interference fits, thick tubes, stress, force-torque relationships.Force and torque transmission on interference fits.
6Conical joints, design parameters, sample problems.
7Bolted joints, types, manufacturing, material selection, sample problems.
8Midterm exam.
9Strength equations of bolted joints ,sample problems.
10Shafts and permanent couplings. Design parameters, material selection.
11Shafts and permanent couplings, pressure oil method, examples.
12Keys, stress equations and materials.
13Pins, material selection and design examples.
14Overall assesment. Review problems.
