The field of healthcare continually evolves with advancements in science and technology, remaining an open area for innovations. One such development gaining increasing significance is biosimilar drugs, a medical breakthrough that is becoming more prominent each day. The seminar on "The Importance of Biosimilar Drugs in Healthcare Policies" conducted by Prof. Dr. Berrin ERDAĞ, Head of the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics at Istanbul Aydın University on November 15, 2023, provided a comprehensive perspective to enhance knowledge and awareness in this domain.

Biosimilar drugs are medications derived from biological sources, possessing similar characteristics to existing biological drugs. These drugs prove to be effective in the treatment of chronic diseases, the management of complex illnesses such as cancer, and the therapy of immunological disorders. As emphasized by Prof. Dr. ERDAĞ, biosimilar drugs play a significant role in healthcare policies by offering a more economical and accessible treatment option.

Their importance in healthcare policies stems from the cost-effectiveness of biosimilar drugs compared to traditional biological drugs. Despite having the same therapeutic effect as the original biological drugs, biosimilars can be produced at a lower cost due to certain differences in the manufacturing process. This has the potential to reduce healthcare expenditures and enhance public health, as highlighted by Prof. Dr. ERDAĞ. The use of biosimilar drugs can increase competition and stimulate innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. As these drugs can be introduced to the market when the patent protection of original biological drugs expires, they provide more choices, diversifying preferences for both patients and healthcare professionals. This, in turn, can improve the effectiveness of healthcare policies and contribute to overall community health.
