Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar

As it is breast cancer awareness month, a seminar titled "Are You Aware? Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar" was held by IAU Faculty of Medicine and Health Service Policies Application and Research Center. With the presentation of Faculty Member of General Surgery Department Prof. Dr. Selin KAPAN, in the seminar attention was drawn to the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Stating that 1 in 5 people in the world will get cancer during their lifetime, Prof. Dr. Selin KAPAN said, "As of 2020, the number of cancer cases in Turkey is around 233 thousand. The number of cancer-related deaths is 126 thousand." Stating that breast cancer ranks first among the types of cancer observed in women, Prof. Dr. KAPAN underlined that 1 in every 8 women is at risk of cancer and 1 in 4 women has cancer. Touching on the risk factors that cause cancer, KAPAN said, "Being a woman and aging are the main reasons. In addition, increased alcohol consumption, smoking and obesity are factors that increase the risk factor."

Prof. KAPAN also stating that men also carry the risk of breast cancer, "1 man for every 100 women gets breast cancer. In fact, this situation can be more severe in male patients." said. Pointing out that breast cancer does not always show symptoms, Prof. Dr. Kapan stated that this risk will be minimized with regular medical examinations every year. Underlining that raising awareness, especially in breast cancer, is important for early diagnosis, Prof. Dr. Kapan said, "Thanks to early diagnosis, the chance of treatment increases, the chance of survival increases and the probability of getting results from the treatment increases."

After the completion of our seminar, a special "thank you" plaque was presented to our speaker by Assist. Prof. Arta ARMANİ, Faculty Member of Istanbul Aydın University Faculty of Medicine (Eng.) and Director of Health Policy Application and Research Center.
