One of the most popular methods of losing weight is surgical operations nowadays. Are these methods healthy? Are people encouraging to these methods via social media? How a healthy slimming should be? We asked to Dr. Indrani Kalkan.
<p><span id="ms-rterangecursor-start" aria-hidden="true" rtenodeid="1"></span><span id="ms-rterangecursor-end" aria-hidden="true"></span><span style="text-align: justify;">Many methods such as stomach botox, laser lipolysis, cold lipolysis and stomach balloon are mentioned for slimming nowadays. About what extent those methods are healthy, Istanbul Aydın University (IAU) Head of Department of Nutrition and Dietetics Dr. Indrani Kalkan stated "as the dynamics and application methods of the mentioned methods are different all methods must be evaluated not generally but seperately. As stomach botox is an easily applicable and low complicationed surgical intervention, demand of obese patients increased especially in recent years. When literature is reviewed, it is mostly seen that weight loss obtained with stomach botox is connected with sustained diet. There are researches that show stomach botox is ineffective in case of low calorie diet is not sustained. The aim in laser lipolysis and cold lipolysis applications is to damage fat cell structure and remove out of the body. In laser lipolysis, fat cells are fractionated with laser beam. In cold lipolysis method, fat cells are cooled to a  determined degree and frozen. It is aimed to provide fat removing out of the body without damaging tissues. While cold lipolysis applied individuals can go on to their daily life after application, a few days rest can be required due to lease lipolysis is a surgical operation and performed under local anesthesia. Stomach baloon application is an endoscopic method that lasts 15-20 minutes. It is a temporary application and baloob stays in stomach for 6 months. After 180 days, stomach baloon must be removed. For healthily acceptance of method, it is important to intently evaluate suitability to the person and considering food habits and current illnesses."</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>"APPLICATION OF THESE TYPES OF METHODS ARE INEVITABLE IN SOME SITUATIONS"</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;">It is the truth that application of these types of methods are inevitable in some situations. About the situations these methods are used, Dr. Kalkan said "Lipolysis is mostly used for body building and regional slimming to reach normal body lines by thinning body. Stomach botox and stomach balloon can be temporarily applied on individuals with super obesity, morbid obesity or who are vulnerable to general anesthesia and have associated disease, before obesity surgery for maximum weight loss."</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>WEIGHTS LOST WITHOUT DIET ARE GAINED BACK</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Dr. Indrani Kalkan stated "Besides those methods, diet is required. Otherwise lost weights can be gained back. Obesity should be evaluated as complex disease. Obesity treatment must be sustained by providing a multidisciplinary approach. As long as individuals employed these methods do not gain healthy diet habit, can gain lost weights in the long term. To reach healthy body weight and maintain it, these methods must be applied in company with dietitians by taking individual features into consideration." </p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>"THESE METHODS ARE USING IN SOCIAL MEDIA IN COMMERCIAL PURPOSE"</strong></p><p style="text-align: justify;">Dr. Indrani Kalkan said "there are unethical sharing about these methods with commercial purposes in social media. In this period that info pollution is too much, fallacious and scientifically invalid posts on slimming are shared by uneducated and nonexpert individuals. Those sharings damage people's body perception. Slimming methods differ in every individual. Those sharings create a generalized effect and mislead that everyone can have the same result and these methods can be applied on people who have diseases." </p><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>HOW SHOULD BE HEALTHY SLIMMING?</strong></p><p>Explained how can healthy slimming be, Dr. Indrani Kalkan said "people's demand of slimming as soon as possible without thinking their health brings along wrong application risks. Diet programs constituted by expert dietitians can be followed for taking enough and balanced energy and nutritional ingredients body needs. It is required to exercise regularly, embark on long term objective instead of short term, take care of doctor controls if any disease acquires, and gain health eating habit with diet. As long as individuals gain healthy eating habit and sustain it for throughout the life, healthy slimming will be inevitable."</p>
