Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The main objectives of a first course in mechanics(or strenght) of materials is to expose the students to mathematical models representing the mechanical properties of different materials; develop the stress-strain relationships for most common structural engineering materials and determine force-displacement relationships and stress distributions at a cross-section of axially loaded rods and beams in pure bending and stress/strain transformation equations in two dimensions problems.
Course Content Basic principles, foundations of strength of materials, external forces, internal forces, force diagrams, axial stress and axial strain, stress stain relationships for elastic materials, the safety factor and allowable stress, torsion of circular shafts, pure bending, shear force and shear stress, stress/strain transformation equations with examples for two dimensional states of stress and strain; Mohr's circle.
