Purpose and Content

The aim of the course Introduce basic building materials used in civil engineering such as steel and steel alloys, aggregates, cement and concrete, glass, plaster, wood, asphalt, structural features.
Course Content The atomic structure of materials, atomic bonding, bonds relationships between material properties, crystal systems, crystal types, crystal geometry, crystallographic directions and planes, amorphous structures, solid solutions, atomic diffusion, the crystal structure defects, materials, physical, thermal and mechanical properties of the strain , ductility, fatigue, fracture, physical properties, unit weight, impermeability, water absorption, the classification of construction products, calcium-based binders, gypsum, lime and cement, Portland cement hydration, experiments are performed on cements, cement types produced in Turkey, the classification of the aggregates , harmful substances in aggregates, physical and mechanical properties of aggregates, aggregate grading, fresh concrete properties, processability, weathering, bleeding and uniformity, the experiments are performed on the fresh concrete, mixing water, concrete, chemical additives, mineral additives, hardened concrete properties, factors affecting the strength of concrete, concrete creep, concrete shrinkage, durability of hardened concrete, concrete mix designs, custom concrete.
