Purpose and Content

The aim of the course Distinguish the basics of the engineering materials which are used in the producing of all industrial tools and machines.
Course Content Contents and developments of the material science and its share in the engineering. Classification of the engineering materials. Interstitial forces between atoms, crystallographic structures, defects and their effects on the properties. Solid solutions, diffusion mechanisms. Deformation mechanisms, strain hardening, strain aging. Phase diagrams, reactions and alloys. Ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Non-metallic materials and their properties. Environmental effects.

Weekly Course Subjects

1Introduction to the classification of the engineering materials. Analyzing the atomic structures. Crystallographic structures, directions and planes atomic densities.
2Mechanical properties of the engineering materials. Structural defects and their effects on the properties.
3Classification of the mechanical properties of the engineering materials. Tension and compression. Stress-strain diagrams.
4Bending, torsion and shear. Hardness and measurement scales.
5Fatigue, S-N curves. Creep behavior of engineering materials.
6Phase diagrams and phase equation, cooling curves of pure metals and alloys. Phase transformations reactions.
7Alloys and their diagrams.
8Iron-carbide diagrams. Phase reactions in Iron-Carbide equilibrium diagrams.
9Midterm exam.
10Alloyed steels, advanced heat treatments.
11Non-ferrous alloys.
12Non-metallic materials
13Environmental effects, corrosion.
14Non-destructive inspections.
