Purpose and Content

The aim of the course To enable the student of architecture to understand the urban plan principles and decisions coming from the upper scale through the formation of the built environment and to comprehend the criteria that guide his/her original design.
Course Content Basic concepts in the field of Urban Planning; the concept of urban; the process from the first human settlements to modern cities; current urbanization problems; analytical studies that form the basis for the urban plans.

Weekly Course Subjects

1Introduction of the course, information about the content. Discussion on Istanbul: Comparison with the cities of Türkiye and the world.
2Basic concepts: City, Urbanization, Urban Plan, Planning. Plan types and hierarchy.
3Factors affecting the establishment of cities and settlement form. Transition to settled life. Basic urbanization theories. Practice 1: Analytical studies in the built environment - Determination of the study area.
4Ancient human settlements: Anatolia, Mesopotamia. Practice 1: Analytical studies in the built environment - Building use, construction type, building height, building maintenance.
5Ancient human settlements: Egypt, Indus, China. Practice 1: Analytical studies in the built environment - Urban fabric, TAKS, KAKS, population density.
6INTERMEDIATE DELIVERY-1 : Analytical studies in the built environment. Open presentation and discussion.
7Cities in ancient ages: Greek, Roman
8Midterm exam
9Social structure and urban morphologies in the Middle Ages.
10Renaissance and Baroque settlements and seeking for the Ideal City.
11Industrial Revolution and its effects on cities. Practice 2: Analytical studies in natural environment - Contour analysis, Hydrological analysis.
12Seeking for solutions after the industrial revolution: Urban Development Models and Applications in the 19th Century Practice 2: Analytical studies in the natural environment - Slope analysis
13Seeking for solutions after the industrial revolution: Urban Development Models and Applications in the 20th Century Practice 2: Analytical studies in the natural environment - Aspect analysis.
