Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The Group Counseling course is designed to provide students preparing to enter a helping profession with an understanding of the theory and practice of group counseling. In the course students will explore different theoretical approaches to counseling groups; basic principles of group dynamics, which include leadership tasks, group developmental stages, and member roles; and basic group counseling skills including establishing, leading, and evaluating various types of counseling groups. Consideration will be given to ethical, legal, and professional issues, and each student will have the experience of being a member in a counseling group.
Course Content Basic elements of group counseling: An overview I (Introduction to group counseling / group leader). Basic elements of group counseling: An overview II (Early stages of the group process). Basic elements of group counseling: An overview III Advanced stages of the group process. Use of techniques in group counseling / ethical principles in the process of using group techniques. Techniques in the establishment phase of the group. Techniques at the beginning of the group. Techniques in the transitional phase of the group (Characteristics of the Transitional Phase, Dealing with Defensive Behaviors and Power Clients). Group transitional techniques (Dealing with Conflict, Discovering Common Fear and Resistance, Working with Challenges to the Leader). Group action stage techniques (Characteristics of the Action Stage, Working with Emerging Themes and Intense Emotions). Techniques in the action stage of the group (Working with Dreams, Reflections and Other Mindfulness Problems). Techniques in group termination.
