Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The main goal of the course is to learn the critical use of media and its contents to develop media literacy. Prospective teacher as the target group of this course, can determine the matter of media and media contents for the students of formal education. On this ground they can make decisions about the implication of media and media contens in the education process, learning development and development of media literacy. The students will be able to identify all kinds of tasks related to media education and the oppotunities for developing media literacy. They will be able to use media and communication technologies as a tool in their teaching process.
Course Content Information literacy; conscious use of the internet and social media; effects of social media on individuals; information dissemination and deception power; news dissemination power; media and perception management; legal rights and responsibilities for the media and the Internet; Copyright; the right to personality; information privacy; violation of confidentiality; language use in the media; analysis of value and quality of news; popular culture; male and female roles in the media; consumer culture and advertising; stereotyping in the media.

1General introduction to the concepts of media, technology, information and their contents within the framework of media literacy.
2Introduction to the concepts of communication, mass communication and their theories
3The concepts of literacy and media literacy
4Media Types: Newspapers, Magazines, Television, Radio, Cinema, Internet.
5Concept of advertisement and their analyse
6News in newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and internet. Describing and analysing of news within the principles of media literacy.
7Propaganda concepts in media texts.
8Texts of media that affects emotions and feelings.
9Midterm Exam
10Prejudices and stereotypes in media texts.
11Responsibility and ethical approach in media.
12Freedom of expression in terms of mass, the boundaries of individual rights and private life followed by the media.
13Media and globalization.
14Media Literacy Curriculum in formal education.
