In line with UNESCO's support to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we acknowledge the role of culture, education and science in overcoming shared challenges such as extreme poverty, inequalities, population growth, unemployment, global health threats and natural disasters, threats posed by regional conflicts, terrorism, related humanitarian crises and forced dispacement, natural resource depletion and the impacts of climate change. For the common pursuit of sustainable development, we believe that non-governmental organizations and higher education institutions should collaborate and take active role in developing common solutions to those shared challenges.
Istanbul Aydın University UNESCO Chair in Cultural Diplomacy, Governance and Education and UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Peace for Education held the roundtable, entitled as "UNESCO and Civil Society Contributions to Sustainable Development: Culture, Education and Science", in Istanbul, Turkey, on 23 March 2017. The roundtable provided a platform to share the experiences of UNESCO Chairs, NGOs and higher education institutions and identify possible areas for future partnerships in sustainable development efforts.
