  • The beginning of the "History of Medicine and Ethics" department, which is one of the first year courses of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, is universally and scientifically in BC. It dates back to Hippocrates in the twentieth century. In Prehistoric and Ancient Civilizations, there were treatment methods that we can call a kind of Alternative or Folkloric Medicine, or even Instinctive Medicine. Middle Ages, XIX. Medicine, which has gone through stages until the 19th century, has reached today's modern and scientific state.
  • Taking the History of Medicine and Ethics courses in the Faculties of Medicine in Europe XIX is towards the end of the century. The situation in our country is almost the same. Considering that the medical education really started in 1827 in Istanbul Şehzadebaşı; In 1839, "Askeriye-i Tıbbiye-i Şahane", which was a Military Medical School, was modern in its age. In this school, in 1874, under the name of "Vezaif-i Tıbbiye" (Duties of Physicians), "Deontology" (Science of Duty) mainly took its place in the curriculum. The course, which was given by different professors until 1933 Atatürk's University Reform, was now established as an independent chair in the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine as History of Medicine and Deontology. Ordinarius Prof. Dr. Süheyl ÜNVER was elected as the chair of the chair. According to the University Law No. 1750, the name of the branch was determined as the Department of History of Medicine and Deontology. The branch, which was named "Department" in 1981 according to the law numbered 2547, takes its place in medical education as "Medical History and Ethics Department".

Medical Ethics: The field of Medical Ethics focuses on the ethical dimensions of health and medical research. It explores the moral dilemmas, principles, and policies that arise in the practice of medicine. The Department examines various ethical issues such as patient autonomy, informed consent, end-of-life care, reproductive ethics, resource allocation, research ethics, and conflicts of interest. Develops guidelines, policies and training programs to promote ethical behavior among healthcare professionals and to address ethical challenges in clinical practice and research.
  • The Department of History of Medicine and Ethics typically consists of faculty, researchers, and academics with expertise in the history of medicine and medical ethics. They may be engaged in the research, teaching and publication of scientific work related to these areas. They contribute to the academic community by deepening our understanding of the history of medicine and promoting ethical awareness and analysis in the medical profession. Medical History and Ethics can promote interdisciplinary research, organize conferences and workshops, and provide educational resources on the historical and ethical dimensions of medicine by collaborating with other departments and institutions such as bioethics centres, museums and libraries. Their work contributes to the ongoing development of medical knowledge, health practice, and ethical guidelines to improve patient care and maintain ethical standards in medicine.

  • The Mission of the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics is to advance the understanding and application of ethical, historical and social analysis of health, medicine and healing. In general, the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics aims to advance knowledge, understanding and practice in the fields of medical history and medical ethics. In addition, to play a pivotal role in promoting a deeper appreciation of the historical context of medicine and the promotion of ethical behavior in healthcare by conducting research, providing education and training, and offering ethical guidance.

  • Our goal in education; with the opportunity to evaluate contemporary difficulties "in the light of developments from past to present" by establishing a relationship between the past and the present in order to better understand today's contemporary, modern medicine; understand the realities of change in medicine and health.   • Ethical Guidance and Policy: The Department of History of Medicine and Ethics can also serve as a consultant and consultant on ethical issues in health care. Developing ethical guidelines, policies and recommendations for healthcare providers, policy makers and organizations. The Division collaborates with ethics committees, institutional review boards and other relevant bodies to enable ethical decision-making and address emerging ethical challenges.   • As for Medical Ethics and Deontology; Deontology is the science of Duty, Homework. If it is ethical; it means more moral, morale. It is all of the moral rules and recommendations that vary from society to society and show differences between religions. In deontology, binding rules, regulations and laws such as health-related laws, regulations, patient-physician relations, physician responsibility and medical responsibility are discussed. In Medical Ethics, on the other hand, the main principles of ethics, international declarations on health, and special and current issues of medicine are discussed in terms of ethical and clinical ethics, with theoretical and case analyzes and dilemmas.
