Biophysics is a branch of medical science that combines the principles of physics, mathematics and chemistry to study biological systems. It is typically found in the health sciences department of a medical school or a university and is an essential component of modern medical research and practice. The primary role of the Department of Biophysics is to teach students, including medical students, the physical and chemical principles underlying the structure and function of biological systems, from the molecular to the organismal level. This includes the study of the physical properties of cells, tissues and organs, as well as biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids.

For the definition of biophysics; Different definitions are used, such as "physics of living organisms" or "the application of physical rules in the study of living structures". Evaluation of physical phenomena of body systems such as pressure, flow and movement are among the general biophysics subjects. The interaction of electrical events with a living organism or the electrical events produced by the organism are subjects of electrobiophysics. The interaction of radioactivity and electromagnetic radiation with living things, its use in medicine for diagnosis and treatment are of interest to radiation biophysics. Molecular structure of living organism, interactions with each other, and cellular events from nanotechnology to cancer mechanism are subjects of molecular biophysics.

Biophysics conducts research in various fields such as molecular biophysics, structural biology and bioinformatics to gain a deeper understanding of biological systems at the molecular and cellular level as well as teaching. This research is important for the advancement of medical knowledge and the development of new treatments for diseases and injuries.

Biophysics department also collaborates with other departments such as biochemistry, genetics and pharmacology to provide a comprehensive understanding of the physical and chemical properties of biological systems and how they relate to medical applications. This includes developing new diagnostic tools, therapies and treatments based on a detailed understanding of the biophysical properties of biological systems. Overall, Biophysics plays a critical role in modern medical research and practice, providing a knowledge base that supports advances in a wide variety of medical fields.

Our Mission

Biophysics, which has taken its place among the basic medical sciences courses of medical faculties, is a science that sheds light on clinical applications. We try to convey experience and knowledge to our students by having them do experiments in our advanced laboratory, where they can study these topics both theoretically and themselves. It is our main goal and mission to provide this information to the physicians of the future who think, produce, apply correct diagnosis and treatment at Istanbul Aydın University, which is a very young medical faculty, and to train physicians who are beneficial to their country and humanity and who have reached the modern civilization drawn by Atatürk.

Our Vision

The vision of the Biophysics Department in the Faculty of Medicine generally includes:

  1. Advancing scientific understanding: The Biophysics Department aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the physical and chemical principles that govern biological systems. This involves conducting cutting-edge research that pushes the boundaries of scientific knowledge.
  2. Developing innovative solutions: The Biophysics Department aims to develop innovative solutions to medical problems based on a detailed understanding of the biophysical properties of biological systems. This involves translating scientific discoveries into practical applications that improve human health and wellbeing.
  3. Training the next generation of leaders: The Biophysics Department aims to educate and train the next generation of leaders in the field of biophysics. This involves providing students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to become leaders in academia, industry, and government.
  4. Fostering collaboration: The Biophysics Department aims to foster collaboration between scientists and clinicians from different fields. This involves promoting interdisciplinary research and education to tackle complex medical challenges and improve patient outcomes.
  5. Overall, the vision of the Biophysics Department in the Faculty of Medicine is to be a leader in advancing scientific understanding, developing innovative solutions to medical problems, training the next generation of leaders, and fostering collaboration to improve human health and wellbeing.
