  • The Urology department is a specialized medical division that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders and conditions related to the urinary system and male reproductive system. Urologists are physicians who are specially trained to provide comprehensive care for patients of all ages, ranging from infants to the elderly, who experience urological problems.
  • Here are some key aspects and functions of the Urology department:
  • I. Urinary Tract Disorders:
  1. Urinary Tract Infections: Urologists diagnose and treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can affect various parts of the urinary system, including the bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra. They prescribe appropriate antibiotics and provide management strategies to prevent recurrent infections.
  2. Kidney Stones: Urologists manage kidney stones, which are hard mineral and salt deposits that form in the kidneys. They offer treatment options such as medication, dietary modifications, and procedures like extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) or minimally invasive surgeries to remove or break up the stones.
  3. Urinary Incontinence: Urologists evaluate and treat urinary incontinence, which refers to the involuntary leakage of urine. They assess the underlying cause and may recommend behavioral techniques, medications, pelvic floor exercises, or surgical interventions to manage the condition.
  4. Bladder Disorders: Urologists diagnose and treat various bladder disorders, including overactive bladder, bladder cancer, interstitial cystitis, and bladder prolapse. They provide medical management, perform surgeries when necessary, and offer interventions like bladder instillations or Botox injections to address bladder-related concerns.
  • II. Male Reproductive Health:
  1. Erectile Dysfunction: Urologists assess and manage erectile dysfunction (impotence), a condition characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. They explore underlying causes, prescribe appropriate medications, and offer treatments such as penile implants or other interventions as necessary.
  2. Male Infertility: Urologists evaluate and treat male infertility, which can arise from various factors, including sperm production issues, blockages in the reproductive tract, hormonal imbalances, or genetic abnormalities. They may recommend fertility-enhancing medications, surgical procedures, or assisted reproductive techniques in collaboration with infertility specialists.
  3. Prostate Health: Urologists provide comprehensive care for conditions affecting the prostate gland, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer, and prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate). They offer medical management, perform prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening, perform biopsies, and perform surgical interventions such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or robotic-assisted prostatectomy.
  • III. Urological Surgeries:
  1. Urological Oncology: Urologists perform surgeries to treat urologic cancers, including kidney cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and penile cancer. Surgical interventions may involve tumor removal, organ-sparing procedures, lymph node dissection, or complete organ removal when necessary.
  2. Minimally Invasive Procedures: Urologists utilize minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy or robotic-assisted surgery, to perform various urological procedures. These techniques offer advantages like smaller incisions, reduced pain, faster recovery, and improved surgical outcomes.
  3. Endoscopic Procedures: Urologists use endoscopic techniques to visualize and treat urologic conditions. This may include procedures like cystoscopy (examination of the bladder), ureteroscopy (examination of the ureter), or transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) for diagnosis or treatment purposes.
  • IV. Pediatric Urology:
  1. Pediatric Urologic Conditions: The Urology department addresses urologic conditions specific to children, such as congenital anomalies (like hypospadias or undescended testicles), urinary tract abnormalities, vesicoureteral reflux, and bedwetting. Pediatric urologists offer specialized care tailored to the unique needs of pediatric patients.
  2. Pediatric Urological Surgeries: Pediatric urologists perform surgical interventions for conditions like hypospadias repair, orchidopexy (surgical correction of undescended testicles), ureteral reimplantation, or bladder reconstruction in children.
  • V. Research and Advancements:
  1. Urologists in the department actively engage in research activities to advance the field of urology. They contribute to clinical trials, explore new treatment modalities, develop innovative surgical techniques, and participate in medical advancements to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
  • The Urology department provides comprehensive care for patients with urologic disorders and conditions. Urologists employ medical management, surgical interventions, and innovative techniques to diagnose, treat, and manage urologic concerns while prioritizing patient comfort, well-being, and overall urological health.

  • Our Mission
  • The mission IAU Department of Urology is to provide:
  1. consistent, timely, compassionate, and exceptional patient-centered care by all members of our health care team, focused on achieving an optimal outcome and patient experience
  2. a stimulating environment for learners to explore and grow in their comprehension of broad subspecialty urologic training
  3. transformative research solutions to common as well as complex urologic problems and conditions

  • Our Vision
  • We advance a strong departmental commitment to basic science and clinical research. All departmental faculty are expected to contribute to a vigorous research effort necessary to support the highest quality of innovative patient care. Residents and clinical and basic science fellows are expected to participate in the departmental research effort. Our aim, with involvement of all in the department, is to be a center of urological research excellence.
