Purpose and Content

The aim of the course To learn the basic concepts of the engineering materials.
Course Content Contents and developments of the material science and its share in the engineering. Classification of the engineering materials. Interstitial forces between atoms, crystallographic structures, defects and their effects on the properties. Solid solutions, diffusion mechanisms. Deformation mechanisms, strain hardening, strain aging. Phase diagrams, reactions and alloys. Ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.

2Analysing the atomic structures and crystallographic structures.
3Crystallographic directions and planes, atomic densities.
4Point and linear defects.
5Planar and volumetric defects.
6Diffusion mechanisms.
7Mechanical properties of engineering materials.
8Midterm exam.
9Single and pollycrstalline materials. Dislocations, hardening.
10Classification of Alloys. Phase diagrams. Gibbs Rule.
11Binary phase diagrams.
12Crystallization and grain formation.
13Diffusion and precipitation hardening.
14Phase diagrams and Iron-Carbide diagrams.
