Purpose and Content

The aim of the course Give the basic general chemistry concepts to the engineering students to recognize the importance of the science of chemistry
Course Content Matter-its properties and measurements. Atoms and the atomic theory. Chemical compounds. Chemical reactions. Gases and gas theories. Thermochemistry. The peryodic table and some atomic properties. Chemical bonding I; basic concepts. Chemical bonding II; bonding theories. Liquid,solid and intermoleculelar forces.

Weekly Course Subjects

1MATTER-ITS PROPERTIES AND MEASUREMENT: The scope of chemistry, the scientific method, properties and classification of matter, measurement of matter, uncertainties in scientific measurement, significant figures
2ATOMS AND THE ATOMIC THEORY: Early chemical discoveries and the atomic theory, electrons and other discoveries in atomic physics, the nuclear atom, chemical elements, atomic masses, introduction to periodic table, the concept of the mole and the Avagadro constant, using the mole concept in calculations.
3CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS: Types of chemical compounds and their formulas, the mole concept and chemical compounds, composition of chemical compounds, oxidation states, names and formulas of inorganic and organic compounds
4CHEMİCAL REACTIONS: Chemical reactions and chemical equations, chemical equations and stoichoimetry, chemical reactions in solution, determining the limiting reactant, other practical matters in reaction stoichoimetry.
5INTRODUCTION TO REACTIONS IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS: The nature of aqueous solutions, precipitation reactions, acid-base reactions, oxidation reduction reactions and, their balancing, oxidizing and reducing agents, stoichoimetry of reactions in aqueous solutions: Titrations.
6GASES: Properties of gases: Gas pressure, the simple gas laws, the ideal and general gas equation and their application, gases in chemical reactions, mixtures of gases, kinetic-molecular theory of gases and gas properties related to its theories, non-ideal gases.
7THERMOCHEMISTRY: Some therminology in thermo chemistry, heat, heats of reaction and calorimetry, work, first law of thermodynamics, heats of reaction and determination: Hess’s Law, standard entalpies of formation.
8ELECTRON IN ATOMS:Electromagnetic radiation, atomic specktra, quantum theory, the Bohr atom, to ideas leading to mean quantum mechanics, wave mechanics, quantum numbers and atomic orbitals, interpreting and presenting the orbitals of hydrogen atoms, elektron spin, multielectron atoms, electron configurations and periodic table

10THE PERIODIC TABLE AND SOME ATOMIC PROPERTIES: Classifying the elements: The atomic law and periodic table, metals and nonmetals and their ions, the size of atoms and ions, ionization energy, electron affinity, magnetic properties, periodic properties of the elements
11CHEMICAL BONDING I: Basıc Concepts: Lewis theory, covalent bonding, polar covalent bonding, writing Lewis structures.
12CHEMICAL BONDING II: Basıc Concepts: Exceptions to the Octet rules,the shape of molecules, bond order and bond lengths, bond energies
13CHEMICAL BONDING III: Introduction to the valance-bond theory, hybridization of atomic orbitals, multiple covalent bonds, molecular orbital theory, delocalized electrons, bonding in metals
14LIQUIDS, SOLIDS AND INTERMOLECULAR FORCES: Intermolecular forces and some properties of liquids, and vaporization of liquids. Vapour pressure, some properties of solids, phase diagrams, Van der Waals forces, Hydrogen bonding, crystal structures.
