Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The course aims at providing the participants with a comprehensive and systematic knowledge on the political history of Ottoman Empire and Turkey in the 19th and 20th centuries. The course is also intended to provide the students with a framework of analysis that allows them to study the main facts and concepts of political science and international relations within the context of Turkey in a historical perspective. The course thus complements the course on "TURKISH POLITICAL SYSTEM", reinforcing it with a chronological approach.
Course Content The course is conceived to provide fundamental knowledge on historical developments in domestic politics in Ottoman Empire and Turkey from the reign of Selim III to the beginning of the 2000s. Within this framework, a special emphasis will be given to the analysis of fundamental concepts such as modernity, secularism, empire, nation-state, and national sovereignty in the context of modern history of Turkey. The course is also intended to study the economic and social foundations of the political developments.
