Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the main theoretical approaches in and structures of international political economy. Another goal is to enable them to analyze contemporary economic events in light of the theories and concepts of IPE.
Course Content This course focuses on the interaction between institutions and actors in the field of international political economy (IPE). Particularly, it analyzes how power is distributed in the world economy with special reference to trade, production, finance, and knowledge. The course overviews the major theoretical approaches to international trade and investment including mercantilism, liberalism and historical structuralism. Building on these theoretical perspectives, it then examines the effects of international “structures” of trade, production, finance, and knowledge. We will also take up subjects such as globalization, global commodity chains, multinational corporations, regional integration, migration and the illegal economy.
