Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The aim of this course is to reveal the relationship between mythology and theatre as well as introducing antiquity plays that are studied in theatre courses.
Course Content The content of the course consists of subjects such as the relationship between art and mythology, the affect of mythology on the birth and development of art, and the effect of western and eastern mythology on art.

Weekly Course Subjects

1The concept of mythos-logos, its properties, function, the research topics of mythology in rituals, origin, cult, prestige and the myths of eschatology.
2Mesopotamian myth from pre-Asian mythos: Sumer, Akad, Babylon and ugarit mitoses.
3China and Japan myths from far-east cultures, myths from Middle Eastern people, Ancient India myths and Scandinavian countries’ mythos.
4Mythos of Anatolian civilizations, Anatolian cult of goddess, archeological data.
5Differences, similarities and effects of Anatolian mythos on Greek mythos.
6The civilization of Crete and Mykenai. Examining the literary pieces from Homers and Hesiodos as the sources of Hellene mythology. Mithological qualities in tragedy through the study of writers such as Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus.
7The primary powers in Hellene mythology, earliest generation of gods, the creation of the universe, the five ages of humanity.
8The twelve Olympus.
9Mid-term
10The battle of Troy, the birth of Heracles, life and death.
11The heroism of Odysseus, Mysteria of Orpheus and Eleusis, Oedipus and sphinx, Eason and Argonauts, Persus and Medusa, Daidalos.
12Mythological characters such as Godly flora, Niobe, Bellerphontes, Pelops, Theseus, and Sisypos.
13Roman mythology, traditional gods, predecessor of Roman people, Aineias, Romus-Romulus, Philemon and Baucus, Amor and Psykhe.
14General evaluation.
